How to Stay Balanced Over the Holidays: Fitness Tips With Lauren Hannaford

Lauren Hannaford is a former Wiggles Character, Dorothy the dinosaur, elite gymnast and fitness model, so she knows a thing or two about endurance and fitness. Who better to share some top fitness tips?

Robyn Foyster: Lauren, Easter is just around the corner, and we all know what that means — family, friends… and chocolate. As someone who’s an elite gymnast, fitness model, and even a former Wiggles character, what’s your top tip for keeping fit without missing out on the fun?

Lauren Hannaford: It’s that time of year where indulgence is everywhere, and yes, your usual workout routine can be challenged with all the sensory overload of festive meals. The key is balance. It’s normal to enjoy yourself, but you don’t want to go overboard and undo all your hard work.

Robyn: Balance sounds simple in theory, but how do you actually do it in practice?

Lauren: Planning ahead is everything. In the weeks leading up to Easter, I make sure my training is consistent and my meals are mostly healthy. I also allow myself treats, but I’m mindful — I’ll have a small portion instead of going overboard. The idea is to reward yourself without taking a step backwards on your fitness goals.

Robyn: What about the day itself, with chocolate, hot cross buns, and all the extras?

Lauren: Moderation is key. My tips are:

  • Be mindful of portions — you don’t have to skip your favourite treats, just be conscious of how much you’re eating.
  • Stay hydrated — water helps curb sugar cravings.
  • Balance the rest of your meals — make sure breakfast, lunch, and dinner are nutritious and aligned with your usual fitness program.

If you focus on these points, you won’t have to “undo” anything on the treadmill later. It’s about maintaining equilibrium, not restriction.

Robyn: That sounds so practical. Any last advice for someone worried about over-indulging?

Lauren: Enjoy yourself! Easter is meant to be fun. Think ahead, plan your meals, and add a pinch of balance to each indulgence. When the holiday is over, you’ll feel proud you could celebrate without guilt — that’s what makes it sustainable.
