How To Keep Cool This Summer: Survival Tips For An Aussie Heat Wave
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Below are the top summer tips to take care of yourself and your home over the summer months, from saving energy to staying hydrated and being allergy aware.

By following these easy tips you can enjoy a more relaxed and energy efficient summer.

1. Drink more water

Ensure you stay hydrated by drinking two to three litres of water a day – especially on hot days. According to betterhealth.vic.gov.au, the recommended amount of water to drink each day is 2.1 litres for women and 2.6 litres for men. In summer this should be upped to combat dehydration.

2. Manage allergies

According to recent research, 56% of Aussies surveyed suffer from hay fever and the effects flare up most during spring and summer. By keeping windows closed and using air conditioning systems fitted with allergen deactivators, sufferers can reduce the effects felt while at home.

3. Be allergy aware

Get into the routine of checking on pollen counts and bush fire warnings before you leave the house to see how you will be affected during the day. We’re heading for a hot summer, so check out weatherzone.com.au and bom.gov.au for weather forecasts and reports.

4. Air Conditioners

Making a smarter choice with your air conditioner can save you money and energy. Energy consumption can vary dramatically between different brands and models. Doing your research before selecting an air conditioner can save you thousands in the long run.

5. Pre-set

Many people waste energy over summer by running air conditioning units all day and night. Money and energy can be saved through controlling temperature and usage while you sleep by using a pre-set programme. Most people set their units to 21 degrees in summer, however if you set the temperature to 23-24°C, you will be comfortable while reducing energy wastage.

6. Eat healthy

Ensure you get enough nutrients in your diet to stay energised and healthy. A balanced diet with portion control is key to a healthy summer. For further advice on healthy eating, check out sites like the Heart Foundation or Eat For Health (eatforhealth.gov.au).

7. Eat outdoors

Take advantage of the hot weather and cook outside using grills, or enjoy more quick and cold meals such as salads. By reducing the use of ovens you will save on energy consumption over summer. Best summer BBQ spots can be found on sites like weekendnotes.com

8. Think sun protection

Carry sunscreen with you at all times. Small pocket sized tubes are handy for when you’re caught outside and need a top up to protect against UVA and UVB rays. The Cancer Council advises using SPF30 or above, and reapplying liberally every two hours or after swimming and exercising.

9. Cool off

In hotter months a cool shower can be refreshing as well as energy saving. According to Energy Australia, by reducing water temperature you can save on energy bills. Also consider installing water saving shower heads and timers for reducing time in the shower.

10. Live alfresco

Get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Summer is the perfect time to escape the same four walls, and being outside means your energy consumption drops.
