Nine in ten adolescents are suffering unnecessarily with acne. Hormones and foods are listed as the main causes. These can be managed with diet and potentially deadly medications avoided. The latest treatment options.

Acne affects 54% of adult females and 90% adolescent teenagers.

The current medical treatment for acne vulgaris in teenagers is the oral contraceptive pill or Isotretinoin (tradename of Roacutane in Australia), which has been linked with increased teenage suicide, known liver toxicity and potential pregnancy abnormalities hence its category D rating for pregnancy.

The good news is, many teenagers (and adult females for that matter) can manage their acne themselves without the need for medications.

Hormone changes cause acne vulgaris. The most common being estrogen and testosterone. Discovering how to keep these hormones balanced will resolve most skin issues, but it is rarely discussed with most teenage girls being offered the pill, or the roacutane.

Foods also play a big role in disrupting the oil on the skin, as well as impacting directly on hormones. Foods high in sugars, dairy and even gluten are all linked with skin issues.

Encouraging and explaining hormone imbalances and how to manage them through food and lifestyle, is Nutritionist and bestselling author, Sam Beau Patrick. “Eating less starch carbohydrates lowers testosterone, as does reducing stress. It is hard for teenagers to value stress reducing activities as the message from schools and parents is to WORK HARDER, yet scheduling in down time, exercise and eating healthy can all lead to clear skin.”

According to Australian resources:

  • 90% of 16-18 year olds suffer with acne
  • 54% of adult women suffer with acne
  • Roacutune is in the top 10 drugs recognised by the FDA for causing increased suicide risk and harm

I have many clients who have sought her advice and following simple daily changes, have turned their hormone imbalances and acne around naturally.

One client came to me a few years back and turned her skin issues around with hormone balancing.

Uprising artist guru Emma Chen has also been able to control her acne and skin by following my hormone advice and is medication free.

There are affordable, and effective measures you can take on your own without medication. My bestselling book, Beauty and the Beast Within discusses natural ways to balance hormones and what foods to eat.
