A healthy liver is an important foundation for all-over health and vitality. Gwinganna’s leading wellness experts share their top tips for detoxing, healing and nourishing your liver.

Start now and build a liver maintenance program that’s part of your daily routine.

1. Try some herbal help

Herbs protect liver function by stimulating bile flow and helps the organ to regenerate itself. Popular herbs for liver support include milk thistle and dandelion root. See a naturopath to get a recommendation and ensure you get the best quality.

2. Take a break from caffeine

Caffeine is a liver loader and has to be processed like a toxin. Caffeine slows the liver’s ability to cleanse the blood from other harmful toxins, so try taking a break from caffeine in foods and drinks, or at least cut back how many lattes you have each day.

3. Sleep Well

When you go to sleep at night, your brain releases melatonin, a hormone that helps to regulate your sleep cycle. Melatonin shares the body’s toxic load with the liver by helping to neutralise free radicals and by regenerating the body overall. Sleeping well helps ensure your body can fully restore and process all that it needs to each night.

4. Go Organic

Choose to buy organic fruit, vegetables and meat. Non-organic products often contain toxic poisons, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics which can all build up in your body and inhibit liver function along with many other implications.

5. Water, Water, Water

Drinking at least two litres of filtered water per day helps the liver (and kidneys) with toxin elimination. Small and frequent sips are best. Also avoid a lot of water (especially cold water) with meals as it can dilute gastric juices in the stomach, inhibiting digestion and further increasing the liver’s workload.

6. And less Alcohol

Alcohol is a toxic substance that the liver is responsible for metabolising. It may cause cellular malformations, scarring and inflammation, all of which inhibit liver function and cause potential liver disease. Especially after the festive season, reduce the amount of alcohol you consume and commit to having at least 2 consecutive alcohol free days a week. Your liver will function better and love you for it.
