Combining a love for nature with physical challenges—like summiting a breathtaking mountain—is a thrilling part of an active wellness lifestyle. But a recent dramatic rescue operation on Indonesia’s Mount Rinjani is a reminder that when we venture into remote environments, prioritising safety and emergency preparedness is just as important as packing our hiking boots.

This week, the FINNS Search & Rescue Helicopter, in coordination with BASARNAS, SGI, and Nusa Medica, successfully evacuated an injured female Malaysian tourist from Mount Rinjani after a harrowing multi-day rescue effort impacted by severe weather.

Here is a look at what happened, how she was brought to safety, and the crucial travel safety takeaways every adventurous woman needs to know.

The Rescue Incident: A Sudden Fall and a Race Against the Weather

On May 25, 2026, the hiker sustained trauma and back injuries after a fall while descending from the summit of Mount Rinjani. In a beautiful display of trail solidarity, fellow hikers manually assisted her to a temporary tented area where she could shelter while awaiting evacuation.

Because of the remote location and the severity of her injuries, a helicopter evacuation was the only safe option. However, nature had other plans:

  • Day 1 (May 25): The FINNS Search & Rescue Helicopter departed Bali shortly after the emergency call. By the time they reached the mountain at 5:05 PM, dense fog and rapidly deteriorating visibility made a rescue impossible. To comply with Indonesian aviation safety regulations requiring operations to conclude before sunset, the crew had to make the difficult decision to turn back.
  • Day 2 (May 26): At first light, the crew resumed the mission. Arriving at the site by 8:10 AM, hoist personnel secured the landing zone. The patient, conscious but unable to move independently, was safely loaded onto a stretcher and airlifted to Bali, where a Nusa Medica ambulance was waiting to rush her to the hospital.

The Lifesaving Power of Rapid Response

“When somebody is injured in a remote or mountainous area, time matters. These environments are incredibly challenging, and weather conditions can change within minutes,” noted Paul Hussey, Global COO of FINNS.

The successful rescue highlights the incredible importance of rapid-response aviation in difficult-to-access regions, saving precious hours—or even days—compared to traditional ground rescues.

Paul Doxey, CEO of SGI Air Bali, praised the seamless teamwork between private emergency responders and local authorities, stating, “This mission required patience, precision, and teamwork… We are proud to work alongside BASARNAS, Nusa Medica, and FINNS Search & Rescue to help deliver critical emergency response support.”

Wellness Takeaway: How to Protect Yourself on Your Next Adventure

While we never want to imagine the worst-case scenario on our travels, being prepared empowers you to explore with confidence. If you are planning an adventurous hike or a remote wellness retreat, keep these actionable safety tips in mind:

  • Invest in Comprehensive Travel Insurance: Never assume standard insurance covers extreme sports or remote rescues. Ensure your policy specifically covers helicopter evacuation and high-altitude trekking.
  • Know Your Emergency Contacts: Before you step onto a trail, save local emergency numbers. Note: If you are traveling in Indonesia, the BASARNAS emergency rescue number is 115.
  • Hike with a Community: The hiker on Mount Rinjani was assisted by fellow trekkers who helped her to shelter. Whether you hire a local guide, join a group, or hike with a buddy, there is absolute safety in numbers.
  • Respect the Weather: As the rescue helicopter experienced, mountain weather changes in the blink of an eye. Pack for dropping temperatures, respect visibility warnings, and know when it is time to turn back.

Adventure is out there, and it is incredibly rewarding for your mind, body, and spirit—just make sure you are stepping onto the trail fully prepared!
