When it comes to international cuisine, Australians have a soft spot for Chinese food. A national survey of more than 1,000 people, conducted for Maille, found Chinese was the favourite, closely followed by Italian, with Mexican and Indian also popular.

The survey revealed some interesting differences too. Women were more likely to choose Italian as their favourite, while men leaned towards Chinese. Younger Australians preferred Italian and were bigger fans of spicy Mexican and Indian food than older generations.

The good news about Chinese cuisine

Traditional Chinese cooking has plenty going for it. Steaming, stir-frying and braising are quick methods that keep vegetables crisp and colourful. Dishes are built around rice, noodles, greens, tofu, seafood and lean meats, with fresh flavours from ginger, garlic and spring onion.

Where it can go off track is with the deep-fried, sugary favourites many of us grew up on in suburban restaurants.

How to order healthier Chinese food

  • Choose steamed over fried. Steamed fish, dumplings and vegetables are lighter options.
  • Load up on greens. Add a plate of Asian greens with garlic or oyster sauce.
  • Go easy on sweet sauces. Lemon chicken, honey prawns and sweet and sour dishes are often high in sugar.
  • Swap fried rice for steamed rice. Brown rice is even better if it is on offer.
  • Share dishes. Ordering a variety and sharing banquet-style keeps portions in check.
  • Watch the salt. Ask for sauces on the side where you can.

Cook it at home

A simple stir-fry with lean protein, plenty of vegetables and a splash of soy sauce is one of the fastest healthy dinners there is. MasterChef champion Diana Chan has spoken about her love of hawker-style street food, a reminder of how fresh and vibrant Asian cooking can be.
