We eat with our eyes first, and a beautiful photo of a nourishing meal can be genuinely inspiring, whether it is for your Instagram feed or your own recipe journal. The good news is you do not need fancy gear. Your phone is more than enough if you follow a few simple rules.

1. Chase the natural light

Daylight is your best friend. When you are eating out, grab a window seat if you can. Food looks fresher and colours look more vivid in soft natural light.

In a dim restaurant, a friend’s phone screen set to white (or a phone torch bounced off a napkin) can gently light your plate.

2. Find the dish’s best side

Just like people, every plate has a good side. Turn it slowly and watch how the light falls. Stacked dishes like burgers and layered salads usually shine side on, while bowls and flat lays look best from directly above.

3. Mix close-ups with the full spread

Take a mouth-watering close-up of the texture, then step back and capture the whole table. Together they tell the story of the meal.

4. Shoot in portrait

Vertical photos take up more of the screen on social media and work beautifully for food and drinks. Leave a little space around the plate so it is easy to crop.

5. Show the scale

Include a fork, a hand or a glass to show how big (or small) the dish really is. It makes the shot feel real and relatable.

6. Snap, then put the phone away

Take your photo quickly while the food is at its best, then put the phone down and enjoy it. Mindful eating, savouring the colours, smells and flavours without distraction, can help you feel more satisfied and tune in to your hunger cues.
