Sun and Vitamin D

Here in Australia, we’re lucky to have lots of sun most of the year and you’d think it would translate to most of us being high in vitamin D. But the stats from the Australian Bureau of statistics show around 1 in 4 people of us are vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D plays such an important role in our overall health, it’s a bit surprising to hear approximately a quarter of our population could do with more.

Known as the ‘sunshine’ vitamin, vitamin D is needed for proper bone development and plays a key role in our immune system health. Vitamin D enables us to utilise calcium efficiently and this in turn, helps us form and maintain strong bones and teeth.

Our body makes vitamin D naturally when we’re out in the sun. In Australia, that’s not a hard thing to do – especially at this time of year! But for those of us who work indoors during the day or just don’t have the time to get out in the sun, it’s possible to get some vitamin D from what we eat. The chief dietary source of vitamin D is fish and fortified dairy products – so if you’re a strict vegetarian or vegan, you may need to take a vitamin D supplement if you’re lacking in it.

Vegan Vitamin D3
Vegan Vitamin D3 from Whole Earth
& Sea is vitamin D in its more easily absorbed form – Colecalciferol.

Whole Earth & Sea is a Canadian-owned company, Australian-operated company, which has recently released a vegan vitamin D3 With 1000 IU in each capsule. This will help meet individual vitamin D requirements when dietary intake or sun exposure is low.

This plant-based vegan vitamin D3 is also highly bio-available because it’s sourced from a rare species of non-GMO lichen which has the ability to produce vitamin D in its most bio-active form – Colecalciferol – or the natural D3 form. Vitamin D3 is more easily absorbed and utilised by the body than plain old vitamin D.

According to Whole Earth & Sea, this lichen is wild-harvested and extracted in a sustainable manner and then carefully processed to ensure it stays pure and stable.

The key features and benefits of this Vegan Vitamin D3 are:
● Provides easily absorbed vitamin D3 from plant sources.
● Ideal for vegans and strict vegetarians.
● Helps prevent vitamin D deficiency.
● Improves calcium absorption for strong bones and teeth.
● Supports bone health in post-menopausal women.
● Supports healthy pregnancy and foetal development.
● Enhances immunity.
● Certified non-GMO and gluten-free.
● It’s certified to be 100% plant-derived vitamin D3 by the Vegan Society.

Where is Whole Earth & Sea set up?
Whole Earth & Sea is a Canadian-owned, Australian-operated company which has been in operation for over 65 years. According to Evan Hayes, the managing director of Factors Group Australia, which distributes the products here: “The company has always had a commitment to producing organically grown raw materials and these are then processed with the company’s own proprietary technology called EnviroSimplex. This processing technology is done below 48 degrees which is one of the ways they preserve the natural goodness of the raw ingredients in the supplements and powders.”

“Many of our ingredients are grown at the organic Factors Farms in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, to ensure quality control of our raw materials,” he adds.

The company aims to provide a broad spectrum of phytonutrients in its products and this is why they use a lot of raw products to make their supplements. They use these natural ingredients in the supplements so they can deliver a complex matrix of vitamins, minerals and enzymes – surrounded by the high-quality of raw foods.

There’s a whole range of Whole Earth & Sea supplements

Whole Earth & Sea provide a whole range of supplements and protein powders, all grown organically and from non-GMO sources. Another supplement from the company which has wide appeal is their Women’s Multi Vitamin which, according to Evans: “… aims to provide a wide range of nutrients in a meaningful daily dose.”

“Multivitamins can be a great way to get the additional vitamins, minerals and nutrients needed to support the body. While many nutrients can be obtained through the diet, it is unlikely that all of the vitamins and minerals will be obtained that way,” he adds.

Hayes further states: “Each tablet contains Farm Fresh Factors blends which is made up of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients from nutrient-dense foods that are rich in essential antioxidants.”

“We also use proprietary EnviroSimplex technology to ensure that the extraction process retains nutrient concentration and therefore, enhances bioavailability in the body,” he adds.

Food sourced nutrient examples are amla (vitamin C), sunflower (vitamin E), natto (vitamin K2), algae (calcium), lichen (vitamin D3), kelp (iodine), marigold (lutein), and tomato (lycopene).

Some key benefits of Whole Earth & Sea Women’s Multi Vitamin
• Specially designed to meet the nutritional needs of younger women.
• Made from raw, whole-food bioenergetic products with ‘active’ vitamins added.
• Contains farm-fresh, sustainably-grown, non-GMO ingredients.
