Can Caffeine Stimulate Hair Growth?

Discover how caffeine can stimulate hair growth, reduce hair loss caused by stress and DHT, and improve hair quality, according to expert research.

If your mornings aren’t complete without coffee, there’s good news: caffeine isn’t just a pick-me-up, it may also help protect hair from the effects of male hormones.

Dr. Adolph Klenk, an internationally recognised hair and caffeine expert and the scientist who first discovered caffeine’s benefits for hair, highlights several factors that contribute to hair loss in men. Age, stress, low iron or zinc levels, thyroid dysfunction, and extreme dieting can all play a role.

“Stress-based hair loss, restrictive diets, and poor nutrition can cause premature exhaustion of the hair organ,” says Dr. Klenk. “The hair follicle is like a high-powered engine without adequate support, it stops functioning properly.”

Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia (AGA), typically begins after 40 and affects about 50% of men by age 50. Research from the University of Lübeck shows that caffeine can help by blocking dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that shrinks hair follicles and causes hair loss. Caffeine also strengthens the follicle’s barrier, enhances penetration of nutrients, and stimulates hair growth.

“Caffeine is a strong energy enhancer,” adds Dr. Klenk. “It not only stimulates the brain but also energises hair follicles. It can speed up hair growth, extend the growth phase, and improve hair structure.”

Results can be noticeable within three to six months when caffeine is applied topically, such as in a leave-in treatment or shampoo. While drinking coffee alone would require an impractical 50 cups per day to achieve similar benefits, topical applications deliver caffeine directly to the hair follicles.

It’s important to note that caffeine primarily supports hair affected by stress, nutrient deficiencies, or hereditary male pattern baldness. It does not prevent hair loss caused by medications or chemotherapy.

Still, caffeine offers a dual benefit: it can boost both your energy and the health of your hair, making it a simple addition to your haircare routine with scientifically backed results.
