Picture it: thousands of people dressed head to toe in white, gathering at a secret location in the heart of the city. Tables are set with white linen, silverware and flowers. Napkins wave in the air, sparklers are lit and the dancing begins.
This is Dîner en Blanc, the elegant pop-up picnic that began in Paris and has since been staged in cities around the world, including Melbourne.

How it works
The location is kept secret until just before the event. Guests gather at meeting points across the city and travel together to the venue, which is usually one of the most beautiful public spaces in town.

The rules are strict, which is half the fun:
- Everyone must wear white and dress elegantly.
- Guests bring their own table, two white chairs, white linen and proper china, glassware and cutlery.
- Picnic baskets should be filled with quality food. Wine and champagne are in, beer and spirits are out.
- The event goes ahead rain or shine.
- At the end of the night, everything is packed up and the site is left spotless.

When Dîner en Blanc first came to Melbourne, more than 8,000 people registered for a seat, with celebrities and foodies happy to join the waiting list. Co-organiser Mikaela Smith-Chandler said Melburnians embraced the philosophy whole-heartedly, because they love seeking out unique experiences.

Why communal dining is good for us
Beyond the spectacle, events like this tap into something deeply human: sharing a meal. Eating together is linked to stronger social connection, which is one of the most powerful predictors of health and happiness as we age.
- It builds connection. Sharing food with friends and strangers creates a sense of belonging.
- It slows us down. Long, leisurely meals encourage mindful eating and real conversation.
- It sparks joy. Dressing up, music and a touch of theatre lift the mood.

Bring the idea home
You do not need a secret location to enjoy the spirit of Dîner en Blanc. Host an all-white picnic in your local park, ask friends to bring a plate and leave nothing behind but happy memories.
