Fashion week is about more than the clothes. Backstage at the New York shows, nail artists working with cult polish brand essie created looks for designers from Alexander Wang to Carolina Herrera. Seasons come and go, but these looks have proven remarkably timeless.
Sporty neon pops
At Alexander Wang, structured black and white outfits were contrasted with pops of neon orange and electric blue. Bright tips or a single neon accent nail capture the same sporty energy.
Pretty pastels with a twist
Altuzarra mixed throwback gingham, pearls and soft pastels with sensual red florals. A soft pastel manicure always feels fresh in spring and summer.
Bold colour
Carolina Herrera’s runway glowed with vibrant pinks, iris blue, purples and sunshine yellow. A confident, glossy colour is the easiest way to lift an outfit.
A little sparkle
Naeem Khan sent sequins down the runway on everything from track pants to gowns. A shimmering top coat brings the same glamour to your fingertips.
Soft and romantic
Rebecca Minkoff’s breezy pastels and ruffles called for delicate, barely-there nails.
Holiday brights
Sophie Theallet’s collection, inspired by Montego Bay, used vibrant yellow, red and green. Holiday-inspired brights are pure fun.
Tomboy glam
Veronica Beard mixed tiger prints and sequins with a tough leather jacket. Try a deep, moody shade for that edge.
How to keep your nails healthy
- Give them a break. Go polish-free for a few days between manicures.
- Moisturise. Massage cuticle oil or hand cream into nails and cuticles daily.
- Wear gloves. Protect nails when cleaning and washing up.
- File gently. File in one direction to prevent splitting.
- Eat well. Protein, iron and biotin-rich foods support strong nails.
- Watch for changes. Persistent discolouration, ridges or brittleness can be worth mentioning to your GP.
