When you think of red carpets, the Academy Awards probably spring to mind. But every year, Sydney rolls out a red carpet of a different kind for the people who put fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers on our tables.
Hosted by Sydney Markets, the Fresh Awards celebrate excellence across the fresh produce and flower industry in NSW and the ACT. In 2024, there were 89 finalists across 22 categories, from greengrocers and growers to florists and providores.

The heart of Sydney’s fresh food
Sydney Markets is home to the Sydney Produce Market, Sydney Flower Market, Sydney Growers Market and Paddy’s Markets. More than 2,000 businesses and thousands of local and interstate growers rely on it to get fresh food to retailers, restaurants and shoppers.

How the winners are chosen
The judging process is thorough. Entrants are assessed on everything from product quality to customer service, using customer surveys, farm inspections and mystery shopping. It is less about glamour and more about the everyday dedication that makes it easy for us to eat well.

Sydney Markets CEO Brad Latham has spoken about the enthusiasm and commitment of the markets community, and the strong sense of camaraderie at what has become known as the Oscars of the food industry.
Why it matters for your health
- Fresh produce is the foundation of a healthy diet. Most Australians still do not eat enough fruit and vegetables.
- Great greengrocers make it easier. Knowledgeable staff can tell you what is in season, how to store it and how to cook it.
- Seasonal food tastes better and often costs less.
- Supporting local growers keeps fresh food close to home.
